Springfield Interchange Project Photos - September 2006

The following 18 photos show various driving views of the Springfield Interchange Improvement Project construction.

These photos were taken on September 3, 2006 by Roads to the Future. All photos were taken with a 2.2x telephoto lens setting. Click on the photo to get a large version of the photo (they range in size from 102 to 178 kilobytes, with most being less than 144 kilobytes).

The 3-lane northbound flyover ramp from I-95 northbound to the Beltway Inner Loop (toward Tysons Corner), was completed and opened to traffic on August 24, 2006. The ramp contains a flyover bridge that is 2,630 feet long. This ramp is easily drivable at 50 mph. The original ramp for this movement was closed, and will be demolished. The local ramp from Commerce Street in Springfield, enters this new main ramp as a third lane on the right, and that ramp opened at the same date. These photos show these ramps.

The following 12 photos are in sequence along the new 3-lane northbound flyover ramp from I-95 northbound to the Beltway Inner Loop (toward Tysons Corner).

I-95/I-395 Shirley Highway, northbound heading toward the Springfield Interchange (I-95/I-395/I-495). The 3 lanes to the left are I-395 northbound, and the right lane goes the 3-lane northbound flyover ramp from I-95 northbound to the Beltway Inner Loop (toward Tysons Corner). The first overpass bridge is the ramp from VA-644 Franconia Road westbound, to I-95 southbound. The second overpass bridge is the 4-lane Commerce Street viaduct.

The 3 lanes to the left are I-395 northbound, and the right lane goes the 3-lane northbound flyover ramp from I-95 northbound to the Beltway Inner Loop (toward Tysons Corner). The second lane from the right divides, with one lane continuing as part of I-395, and one lane becoming the inner lane of the northbound flyover ramp from I-95 northbound to the Beltway Inner Loop.

A local ramp from VA-644 Franconia Road westbound, will connect to this main ramp as a fourth lane on the right, and that fourth lane will transition into the 3 lanes of the main ramp, about halfway across the elevated bridge.
