The following 51 photos show various driving views of the Springfield Interchange Improvement Project construction.

These photos were taken on May 13, 2007 by Roads to the Future. All photos were taken with a 2.2x telephoto lens setting. Click on the photo to get a large version of the photo (they range in size from 127 to 270 kilobytes, with most being less than 186 kilobytes).

The following 12 photos are in sequence along the 3-lane northbound I-395 Shirley Highway roadway through the interchange area with the Capital Beltway.

I-395 Shirley Highway, northbound heading toward the Springfield Interchange (I-95/I-395/I-495). The 3 lanes to the left are I-395 northbound, and the 2 lanes to the right go to the 3-lane northbound flyover ramp from I-95/I-395 northbound to the Beltway Inner Loop (toward Tysons Corner). The elevated roadway ahead, is the 2-lane flyover ramp from I-95 northbound to the Beltway Outer Loop (to Wilson Bridge).

Technically the northbound I-95 has already exited from this roadway 1/2 mile behind, making this roadway I-395, but the northbound I-95 traffic heading toward the I-495 Beltway Inner Loop (northbound I-495 toward Tysons Corner) utilizes this 3/4-mile segment of I-395 to access the Beltway Inner Loop.

At the northbound split between I-95 and I-395 (see linked photo), I-395 North to Washington is signed as Exit 170A, and I-495 North to Tysons Corner is signed as Exit 170B. Traffic follows those signs (on 4 periodic overhead sign structures) to the appropriate roadways. That segment of northbound I-395 between I-95 and the ramp to the Beltway Inner Loop, also serves as a ramp highway connecting that movement between northbound I-95 and the Beltway Inner Loop.

The following 7 photos are in sequence along the I-95 northbound C-D roadway that connects VA-644 Franconia Road westbound to I-395, I-495 and I-95; and the new local ramp from the C-D roadway to northbound I-395 (toward Washington). The I-95 northbound collector-distributor (C-D) roadway also accesses I-395 northbound, and I-95/I-495 Outer Loop (toward Wilson Bridge). A future project will extend the I-95 northbound C-D roadway southward to eastbound VA-7900 Franconia-Springfield Parkway.

The retaining wall to the left, is for the local ramp from Commerce Street in Springfield, that connects to the northbound flyover ramp from I-95/I-395 northbound to the I-495 Beltway Inner Loop.
